Wow, nobody seems to want to try this one..I am totally stumped. Never was very good at figuring out a mystery but I have fun trying..lol.

I think Marcella dropped dead from alcohol poisoning and Earnest was at a dig site when he fell into one of his own dig sites and landed on something that killed him..lol :)

Well it sounded good at the time..hehehe.

im thinking the marcella was drinking and spilled it on her scarf and it somehow strangled her. possibly by her falling face down and then breathing the acohol coverd scarf. the son may have also soaked the scarf in something deadly so when she breathed it she inhailed and died.
her son well maybe he picked something up from his digs he got an infection which killed him.

Okay, slueths...ready for one more clue? Here it is:

Ernest was earnest about appearances.

Earnest had recovered some type of bacterial, fungal, etc. agent from one of his archaeologist digs that was fatal if touched. He put some on a liquor cabinet door. So that his mother would go have a drink and die. He would be away and have an alibi. The police suspected some type of toxin but had cleared the crime scene for Ernest to return. Since he couldn't stand the sloppy appearance of his mother's house, he accidently touched some of the substance on an item thrown on the floor that his mother had touched before dying.
